Implants
A dental implant is an artificial tooth root that is placed into your jaw to hold a replacement tooth or bridge in place. The benefit of using implants is that they don’t rely on neighbouring teeth for support and they are permanent and stable. Implants are a good solution to tooth loss because they look and feel like natural teeth.
How long do dental implants last?
Dental implants are thought of as a long term treatment solution and should last in excess of 20 years.
Are dental implants always an option for replacing missing teeth?
Most patients are suitable for dental implants but some medical conditions are a contra-indication. Also the bone quality at the site of the implant is another important factor determining if you are suitable or not. Your dentist will discuss this with you and will take x rays to assess the bone before committing to the implant treatment course.
Are implants safe?
Implants are safe when carried out by an experienced dentist using a renowned implant system. Our implant dentist has completed thorough training in dental implants and has years of experience placing them. We use the well respected 3i, Straumann and Bio Horizons implant systems.
Will my new teeth be fitted immediately?
Sometimes implants can be placed and a crown or bridge fitted onto it the same day. This is not usually our preferred method as we like to alleviate any biting force on the implant in order to allow it to integrate (fuse) with your bone. The preferred method is to place the implant and provide a temporary bridge or denture for 3 months before fitting the final restoration. This gives the best chance for the implant to become solid in the bone and for the gum to heal around it to give a nicer cosmetic result.
How long does treatment take?
In total, treatment usually takes around 3-4 months from the initial consultation to the finished result. The exact treatment time may vary and your dentist will discuss this with you during the consultation.
Can you get gum disease when you have implants?
There are specific gum problems related to implants which usually only happen to patients who neglect their mouth. Poor oral hygiene and failure to attend for annual check ups can result in these problems. We recommend regular hygiene visits and good oral hygiene. Patients who follow this protocol usually have no gum or implant problems.
Will I be able to take the implanted tooth out?
You will not be able to remove crowns or bridges fitted to your implants. Only the dentist can do this. However if you have opted for a denture fitted over implants, then this can be removed for cleaning.
Will the implant be noticeable?
No, we will fit the implant below your gum and will attempt to make the overlying crown as real looking as possible. We will also match it to the shade of your neighbouring teeth to give a beautifully natural appearance.
Are implants strong?
Implants are extremely strong. They are usually stronger than natural teeth.
What happens if the implant does not integrate?
If the implant does not fuse into the jaw bone it will become loose. If this happens it can be taken out and replaced 8 weeks later. There is no charge to replace the implant if it fails in the initial phase.
How much does treatment cost?
Dental implants can cost more than other dental treatments, but they last for many years and have considerable benefits. Your dentist will discuss the exact cost of treatment with you. Our implants cost £1150 each and the overlying crown costs £850.
